George W. Northrup letters, 1852-1865.

Letters (originals, microfilm copies, and typed transcriptions) by Northrup to his family and friends, describing his experiences as a teacher in a mission school for Ojibwe and mixed-blood students at Pembina, North Dakota; as a buffalo hunter; as a government farmer for the Dakota at the Yellow Medicine Agency; as a cavalry scout in the South during the Civil War; and as a member of General Alfred Sully's punitive expedition against the Dakota. Northrup was killed in a battle with the Dakota in 1864, and the letters after that date concern his death.
